Are Lawrence Children safe?

Lawrence is a great town to live in and to raise children.

One of the greatest feeling we can have as parents is that of safety. I feel safe in Lawrence and it is justified. According to an article in the Lawrence Journal World safety in Lawrence increased last year.

We rank 116th in the safest cities in the nation. Compared to other cities in Kansas I would say we are doing pretty well, from most safe to least were: Overland Park, 39; Topeka, 238; Wichita, 295; and Kansas City, KS., 344.

While theses statistics have many critics and cannot be taken by city officials to promote a city or to alarm people against a particular city, for us normal folks who simply live in one of the cities that rank well, it helps with the feeling of safety that we experience.

This said it does not mean that we should not protect our children and that our neighborhoods are free from all dangers.

Self defense is a valuable skill for children as well as adults, the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a three-hour self-defense class Saturday for everyone 13 and older.

According to the press release  the session will last from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Community Building, 11th and Vermont streets, and will cost $16 per person. The class will provide self-defense fundamentals as well as awareness and risk-assessment information.

Two instructors with experience in martial arts and self-defense tactics will teach the class. Registration is available on the department’s Web site, lprd.org, as well as at any Lawrence Parks and Recreation facility. With a little prevention and fun preparation we might never have the need for a child locator.
