A Cucumber in a Bottle
Garden activities for kids unlock the magic of growing plants, provide keys to the mysteries of living things, and open the world of beautiful flowers. Garden activities are great for kids because they don’t require expensive materials, and kids of all ages can enjoy working together on a project outdoors.
Decorated flowerpots with plants in them, make a perfect living gifts for special friends and family members. By making a flower press, you can preserve memories of a wonderful summer garden. And by conducting some fun and simple botany experiments, you can be in the know about how plants grow.
Show kids how to grow a cucumber in a bottle.
Kids will amaze their friends by showing them a plastic soda bottle with a huge cucumber in it. How did it get there? Don’t tell the secret! But here it is: When cucumbers are still tiny and growing on the vine, insert one small cuke into a clean 12 oz. plastic soda bottle. Be sure the bottle is shaded by leaves or newspaper. The cucumber will continue to grow inside the bottle. Once the cucumber has grown quite large, cut it from the vine. Pour in some vinegar to act as a short-term preservative (or a 50/50 water/salt solution), screw on the cap, and proudly show off your cucumber.
Please add the special things you do with your kids in the garden that have been fun, creative, or that were a disaster and you can prevent another parent from repeating a bad experiment.
