What Kids Can Do In The Garden

girl-in-gardenIf children are going to have a garden of their own they must feel that it is their garden and they should help choosing the seed packets. After the planting is done be sure to set the packet on a stick in the area so that kids can remember what will be sprouting soon.

Teaching children about soil is also important so we should let them help in the selection of the area where the garden will be located. Teach children that a heathy garden begins with good soil. If you need help in evaluating your soil and in teaching children about the soil this Soil Test Kit can be a valuable tool.

When you have chosen the spot it is time to prepare the soil. Teach children that like all living things plants need to drink and eat.

What plants  will work better for children? While many of my visitors are from Kansas, there are also many people who visit this site from other areas. So I cannot give a quick list that will fit everybody’s needs but there are some must have plants for children

Because of their appeal and the speed of growth of the sunflower, it must take first place on the list. It will grow very well in many areas and of course in Kansas. The seeds will sprout in about 1 week, but remember that they do take a lot of space and therefore you should limit the planting to only one or two. It will take about 8 weeks for the flower to appear and show the many seeds that make sunflower so attractive. The seeds will dry in the late summer and will be ready for snacks, making the children’s labor worth while. Most kids are sure to enjoy these.

Another rapid growth seed and an easy to plant and produce vegetable is the radish. Radishes germinate in 3 to 10 days and will be ready to eat in as little as 20 to 30 days. Do not plant them too late in the spring as they prefer a cooler weather.

A simple easy fruit, that can also be grown in containers if you do not have much space are strawberries. Children will enjoy eating them straight from the plant. Make sure that they get full sun and I would recommend getting seedlings as they are more difficult to grow from seeds. growing is season is longer a little over 50 to 70 days.

Lastly one easy way to get children cooperation in the garden is to give them garden tools made for their size.
