Starting this Saturday the Downtown Lawrence Farmers’ Market will be active again and bustling with spring plants, fresh baked goods and activity. The grand opening is not planned until the first Sarturday in May. This can be a great activity for the kids.
Since 1976 on any Saturday from April to November the market is active. It starts at 7:OO AM with the ringing of the bell and closes at 11:OO. This year’s grand opening will be May 2nd, and I am sure there will be special activities on that day.
Only locally grown or produced goods are allowed and the variety is plentiful. The Farmers’ Market has become the premiere place to obtain the freshest, most nutritious locally produced agricultural products in the region brought to you by more than 80 growers, ranchers, bakers and fine craftspeople.
Not only will you find food and amusement, there are often musicians and local actors, but you might pick up some of the plants to start some of kids garden activities I talked about in an earlier post.
Since most of the stuff sold at the Lawrence Farmers’ Market is seasonal you might sign up for the market’s newsletter that highlights what is in season. This is also a nice way to teach children the renewal and rotation of plants. The letter is sent out once a week and includes information about vendors, special events and coupons.
The Lawrence Farmers’ Market is a community oriented activity. I consider it another benefit of the market, that it is impossible to spend some time there without getting the feeling of community. By participating and buying food there you keep the local economy strong.
Cash is always welcome but they went through the troubles to have a wireless debit card acceptance system for your convenience. The card device is not only convenient for many but it also accomodates the use of the vision card (the food stamp delivery card).
The Lawrence Farmers’ Market is located in the public parking lot between 8th and 9th Streets and New Hampshire and Rhode Island Streets in Lawrence, Kansas.
You can visit their website and sign up for the newsletter to keep informed of their activities.

We almost forgot that it was already time for the farmers’ market to open again. This is great news as the kids and I always enjoy it.
I strongly recommend to newcomers to try it, I am sure they will find something to their liking.
Thank you for reminding me
