Raining Day Activity-Poetry

poetry is everywhere

poetry is everywhere

As I am building this blog and I find a lack of information being sent to me so that I might  publicize it, I will continue to post little tidbits that might help you do more, share more time, enjoy more, learn more with your kids

I recently came across something that is a lot of fun to use. It is free and it exposes children to poetry.

Now the web being what it is, “DO NOT LET THE KIDS DO THIS ACTIVITY WITHOUT YOU”. Another post on children safety on the net coming soon.

Back to the activity. This is a search engine that looks for poetry. You can type in any word like “tree” “bird” or more specific terms like “robin” instead of bird and you will get a page of links to poems containing this term.

The engine is not perfect and according to its creator Joseph Mosconi it was meant to index mostly avant-garde and experimental poetry and poets — so the fact that Shakespeare and Frost do not appear is not surprising.

The Poetry Search Engine

I offer it here simply as a little something to do with kids when they are bored and who knows what they might discover in an age where poetry is so often ignored.

Here is an idea: read and discuss a poem with your kids tonight.

If you know of some activities that are going on please let me know and I will publicize it here. Coming soon a list of day care activities for the summer as many people will still have to go to work but kids will be out of school. If you are aware of some programs I would appreciate hearing from you. This is an opportunity for  free publicity for your camp or other kids function.
