Friday February 13, Saturday and Sunday the Lawrence Art Center will present a 1963 classic of American youth theatre play “The Ice Wolf”. It is one of the first evocative tragic dramas written for youth theatre. This story of tolerance, based on Inuit and other northern legends portrays a fair haired, light skinned child born into an Eskimo village and, compelled by superstition, the villagers ostracize her. She is driven out of the village into the forest, where she encounters animals and The Wood God, whom she asks to turn her into a wolf. Her hate is vested back upon the village and, in the end, the villagers and The Ice Wolf turn a confrontation into an ultimate realization.
The play by Johanna Halpert Kraus, is to be presented in conjunction with the Spencer Museum of Art’s Spring 2009 exhibition “Climate Change at the Poles” , it is directed by Ric Averill, with sets by Danny Rogovein, costumes by Jennifer Glenn and graphics, set, & costume assistance by Liza MacKinnon.
Performances are Friday, February 13th, 7:00 PM (opening night party), Saturday, February 14th, 2:00 & 7:00pm and Sunday, February 15th, 2:00pm. Tickets are $8.50 for adults and $6.50 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the Lawrence Arts Center or by calling 785.843.2787.
